Rural Telecom Groups Applaud Congressional Rural Caucus’
Endorsement of Telecommunications Principles

Washington, June 28, 2005 – Four national trade associations representing small and midsize telecommunications companies expressed their support today for a set of principles established by the Congressional Rural Caucus to be used as guidelines for legislation rewriting the Communications Act. The Independent Telephone and Telecommunications Alliance (ITTA), the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association (NTCA), the Organization for the Promotion and Advancement of Small Telephone Companies (OPASTCO), and the Western Telecommunications Alliance (WTA) say the integration of these principles by the committee charged with drafting such legislation will help ensure all Americans continue to have access to advanced and affordable communications services, including broadband, and the opportunities provided therein.

The WTA Public Policy Committee, formerly known as Western Alliance, monitors Federal regulatory issues and develops policy positions through submission of filings in various FCC docket proceedings. WTA is dedicated to promoting the interests of rural telcos in high-cost, low density areas. WTA works with members and other trained professionals to pro-actively represent rural telephone systems in federal legislative and regulatory proceedings. The Association is also addressing the significant issues raised by the Telecommunications Reform Act of 1996, such as universal service.
